Philmont 2009

Troop 1154 and Venturing Crew 1154 have been selected to go to Philmont Scout Ranch in the summer of 2009.
Philmont, located in Cimarron New Mexico, is the BSA's premier high adventure base. Every summer, over
20,000 Scouts and Ventures from all over the world visit Philmont to hike its 137,000 acres of wilderness
and participate in high adventure activities (rock climbing, horse back riding, black powder shoot, etc.)
Typically crews spend 12 days and nights at the Ranch and backpack from 60 to 130 miles during a trek.

Members of Troop 1154 have previously participated in Philmont expeditions in 2005 and 2007. Our 2009
expedition is scheduled from June 25th through July 8th. We plan on sending a contingent of up to 4 crews
(that's 48 Scouts and adult Advisors) from the Troop and the Venturing Crew.

The cost of the trip is estimated to be $1200-$1500 per person (including air and ground transportation,
meals, lodging, and activities). This does not include the cost of personal gear (clothing, boots, backpack,
and sleeping bag). An initial deposit of $100 per person will be due no later than 15 January. Payments
of $250 will be due in September 2008 and January 2009. The balance of the cost will be due in the spring
of 2009. We will make fund raising opportunities available (including mulch sales in March of 2008 and 2009)
to allow Scouts to help pay their own way.

To participate, Scouts must be at least 14 by January 1 2009, or have completed the eighth grade and be at
least 13 years of age prior to June 25th 2009. All participants must be approved by the Scoutmaster and the
Venturing Crew Advisor to become part of the expedition. In addition, participants will be required to
commit to shake down treks in the spring and fall of 2008 a well as the spring of 2009.

Each youth and adult member of expedition must sign and return a commitment form along with a $100 deposit
no later than January 15th. Before signing the commitment form, please review the Philmont risk advisory.
